WE KNOW WHO YOU ARE

Thanks to everyone that took the time to fill out our "reader survey". The response was astounding. We had an inclination that Shindig! was a cherished publication that had become more of fellowship than a magazine, yet your comments still floored us.  "Oh boy," I was heard to emotionally extol, "we've done it. Our readers really care. They love us. The comments at the end of the survey prove how much they think about what we do. They get it. And team we must listen carefully to what they say.  Let's give them what they want and satisfy these people that have so ably supported us from the start." As I stood on the table, fist raised, tears streaming down my cheeks it was suggested I get down, have a drink of water and get back to shaping the next issue. But your passionate and supportive remarks got to us all. Read more...

SHATTERING LIVE EXPERIENCE

Renowned photographer Gered Mankowitz unveils an exhibition of classic and unseen shots of Jimi Hendrix and his erstwhile Experience between 18th September (the 40th anniversary of Jimi’s death) and 6th November at the exciting new Snaps Galleries, 8 Piccadilly Arcade, London SW1Y 6NH.
Mankowitz met Hendrix during his formative days in London when the unknown guitarist would sit in with bands at The Scotch Of St James and hang with The Beatles, Stones and assorted ’60s rock royalty.
A highlight of the exhibition promises to be a 6ft X 4ft lenticular print that appears to move!
Prints will be for sale and there’s a private viewing on Thursday 16th September at 6pm so get blagging!

Nick Garrie

NIGHTMARES

Nick Garrie’s barely-released 1969 baroque psych-folk classic The Nightmare Of J B Stanislas will be reissued as a 2-CD deluxe edition by Elefant Records on 4th October.
The troubled gestation of this great “lost” album could fill a book so that’s exactly what Elefant have done, commissioning a 40 page essay penned by Garrie himself.
As well as the original album and book, this edition features a second disc of contemporary demos and works-in-progress and Nick’s ultra-rare ’68 single, released only in France.

CANYONS OF YOUR MIND

We excitedly expounded the charms of Harvey Kubernik’s excellent illustrated paean to the Laurel Canyon music scene of the late ’60s and early ’70s, Canyon Of Dreams, in a previous issue of Shindig!
The book has proved so popular that it’s been worked into a forthcoming BBC documentary, The Musical History Of Laurel Canyon, to be broadcast on 11th and 18th August on Radio 2 and narrated by none other than Micky Dolenz!
A two-page spread in The Independent newspaper will be published around the same time so keep your eyes peeled.
