Just a week before the world locked down, in the wake of an emerging pandemic, TRIPTIDES fled to the desert with their instruments and a tape machine. ‘Latitudes’ is the first cut off of that last minute recording session. And though it was tracked before the descent into our current chaos, the sense of escape captured in that tape feels even more immediate under the strain of isolation. ‘Latitudes’ and its B-Side ‘Cassis’ both dance around the desire to find new beginnings in the unknown. We all tread the ground between the search for comfort and the challenge to grow, and how you perceive your environment has so much to do with that balance. We’re finding now, and what these songs express, is that even if we’ve surrounded ourselves with beauty–even on an idyllic island–that nothing is easy, nothing is final, and we must always seek to find our own path.

Brendan Lazar, Stephen Burns and Glenn Brigman lock it down.

“When SXSW was cancelled, it was just our first instinct to retreat and make the most out of our time together,” said frontman Glenn Brigman. “We went out to Joshua Tree, set up in a house we rented and spent three days with our heads down recording. Every time we looked up, the world was different. For the first time, we were creating music in a time when we had no idea what was becoming of our society and our world. A few days after we got back to LA, they started announcing the lockdown.”

This is one of a very limited number of digital releases by the prolific TRIPTIDES, who are big fans of analogue sounds, they were putting out exclusive cassette tapes long before it was in vogue. “I know it’s not on wax but we realized that vinyl production is going to be slow going for the rest of the year due to the pandemic” explains Brigman “and we still wanted to release some new tunes….thus one of our few “digital” releases in the history of the band. We decided that even though it’s a digital single we still wanted to do an “A side, B side” vibe so we’re releasing two tracks.”
