Beach Boys collaborator\u00a0Stephen Kalinich\u00a0became a friend and mentor, and worked with him on\u00a0<em>Carousel Kites<\/em>. Paul was signed to and then unceremoniously dropped by a major label for not being commercial enough, and then found regular work as a jobbing songwriter for the likes of\u00a0Nicola Roberts,\u00a0Mika,\u00a0Empire of the Sun,\u00a0Luke Sital-Singh,\u00a0The XCERTS\u00a0and countless other mind-numbingly bad pop wannabees. His music also features in the Oscar winning film\u00a0<em>The Shape Of Water<\/em>\u00a0by\u00a0Guillermo Del Toro.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>A mere 10 years later, he returns with\u00a0<em>Carousel Kites<\/em>, a loose concept album reflecting his rocky trajectory through the quagmires of the music industry. He began with a working title of\u00a0<em>April &amp; II\u00a0<\/em>(only works written down) and fleshed out a narrative starting with the very same &#8220;I&#8221; from before. Now grown up and miserable in April&#8217;s absense,\u00a0<em>Carousel Kites<\/em>\u00a0proceeds to tell the story of his salvation through a\u00a0<em>Mr Ben<\/em>\u00a0inspired fantasy shop door \u2013 with the shopkeeper voiced by\u00a0legendary poet and Beach Boys lyricist\u00a0Stephen Kalinich\u00a0\u2013 where he enters a kaleidoscopic faustian nightmare encountering grotesque characters of his own making before eventually stumbling upon his own take on happiness, living forever in his dreams.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>To record the album Paul was joined by\u00a0Nick Littlemore\u00a0(Empire Of The Sun, Elton John v Pnau), actor and saxophonist\u00a0Ralph Brown\u00a0(<em>Withnail &amp; I<\/em>, <em>Star Wars<\/em>), labelmates and old friends\u00a0The XCERTS\u00a0and\u00a0Luke Sital-Singh\u00a0(who was also experiencing a major label dropping) and his original guitarist\u00a0Rachael Wood\u00a0(taking leave from her gig as musical director for Cirque Du Soleil).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Weary of writing music for other people, he felt it was time to go back in to the studio and wanted to release another album before he was thirty. By design\u00a0<em>Carousel Kites<\/em>\u00a0is a challenging and relentless listen\u00a0but he\u2019s finished it and it\u2019s glorious.
