However the\u00a0camaraderie that had lifted <i>Younger Than\u00a0<\/i><i>Yesterday<\/i> was visibly waning, as Crosby\u00a0began to dominate. One critic noted,\u00a0\u201cDavid Crosby is clearly the lead singer,\u00a0Jim McGuinn only had one solo in two\u00a0sets.\u201d An appearance on Swedish show\u00a0Popside in March had a moustachioed and\u00a0hatted Crosby centre stage and providing\u00a0introductions, despite not being lead\u00a0vocalist on any of the three songs mimed.\u00a0Returning to Stockholm in April, they\u00a0rattled out a blistering six-song set for\u00a0Radio Hus. The band\u2019s slot was 17\u00a0minutes, but Crosby found time to boast\u00a0about his role in bringing \u2018Hey Joe\u2019 to the\u00a0masses.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4282\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shindig-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/SD109.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"529\" height=\"391\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shindig-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/SD109.jpg 529w, https:\/\/shindig-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/SD109-300x222.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 529px) 100vw, 529px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Returning to the US in April, The\u00a0Byrds returned to the studio to cut a\u00a0movie theme for Alexander McKendrick\u2019s\u00a0low-rent Tony Curtis vehicle<em> Don\u2019t Make\u00a0<\/em><em>Waves<\/em> \u2013 a questionable deal brokered by\u00a0Tickner. The hastily-written McGuinn-\u00a0Hillman tune barely clocked in at 90\u00a0seconds, and the master tape closes out\u00a0with Crosby sarcastically uttering \u201cGreat,\u00a0let\u2019s double it. Masterpiece!\u201d The song\u00a0crept out on the B-side of \u2018Have You Seen\u00a0Her Face\u2019 in June but was quietly\u00a0disowned by its authors.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Byrds - Don&#039;t Make Waves\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_tCeKBx-vIc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Crosby was more interested in his\u00a0soaring new composition \u2018Lady Friend\u2019,\u00a0which he\u2019d successfully lobbied to cut as\u00a0the band\u2019s next single. Unfortunately, his\u00a0studio tinkering alienated the others.\u00a0\u201cWhen the rest of us weren\u2019t in the\u00a0studio, he went in and replaced our vocal\u00a0tracks with overdubs of his own voice \u2013\u00a0and he added some dreadful horn parts,\u00a0too,\u201d recalled Hillman in <i>Time Between<\/i>.\u00a0\u201cThe end result wasn\u2019t as good as the\u00a0original version, and the whole episode\u00a0created unnecessary drama.\u201d Crosby\u00a0blamed Usher\u2019s mix, calling it \u201cmush\u201d.\u00a0Perhaps in penance, he took a back seat\u00a0and picked up the bass to allow Hillman\u00a0to take the spotlight on guitar for his new\u00a0composition \u2018Old John Robertson\u2019, telling\u00a0Rogan \u201cHe was turning into a damn good\u00a0guitar player by that time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lady Friend\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3o1Vl3HhyBI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>By Summer \u201967 The Byrds were\u00a0dramatically changed from the moptopped\u00a0hipsters of \u201965. McGuinn, Crosby\u00a0and Clarke all now had beards or\u00a0moustaches, while the clean-shaven\u00a0Hillman allowed his natural curls to grow\u00a0into a formidable shock of hair.\u00a0McGuinn, now initiated fully into the\u00a0Eastern Subud faith had even legally\u00a0changed his name from Jim to Roger.\u00a0With the weather looking good, the band\u00a0prepared to drive to the coast for their\u00a0high profile appearance at The Monterey\u00a0International Pop Festival.
