A new anthology celebrating legendary Californian\u00a0psych-rock visionaries THE MISUNDERSTOOD throws up\u00a0unheard cuts and sonic authenticity.\u00a0ANDY MORTEN talks to the set\u2019s curators<\/strong><\/p>\n

For many psych fans seeking vintage\u00a0thrills in the barren pre-reissue days of\u00a0the early \u201980s, Cherry Red\u2019s Before The\u00a0Dream Faded<\/em>, a collection of 1965\/66\u00a0sides by supplanted Californians The\u00a0Misunderstood, proved indispensable. Their\u00a0two Fontana singles \u2018I Can Take You To The\u00a0Sun\u2019 and \u2018Children Of The Sun\u2019 \u2013 released\u00a0almost three years apart \u2013 remain pinnacles of\u00a0the era. Decades of ubiquitous appearances\u00a0on compilations and dubious reissues\u00a0notwithstanding, the half-dozen tracks The\u00a0Misunderstood cut in London in late \u201966 after\u00a0being shipped over at the behest of mentor\u00a0and guru John Ravenscoft (soon to become\u00a0Peel) haven\u2019t been gathered together since, nor\u00a0have they been a orded any kind of audio\u00a0TLC. Until now.<\/p>\n

Children Of The Sun<\/em>, due in March\u00a0on Cherry Red\u2019s bespoke psych imprint\u00a0Grapefruit, looks set to put things straight.\u00a0\u201cYou\u2019ll be hearing most of these tracks\u00a0from the original mono masters for the first\u00a0time,\u201d explains compiler and super-fan Mike\u00a0Stax. \u201cThe versions on Before The Dream\u00a0Faded<\/em> were in reprocessed stereo with reverb\u00a0added. The versions on this collection are\u00a0true to the original recordings. (Producer)\u00a0Alec Palao uncovered an alternate mix of\u00a0\u2018Children Of The Sun\u2019 on an acetate in the\u00a0collection of Geoffrey Weiss. Also making\u00a0its debut is the unedited take of \u2018I\u2019m Not\u00a0Talking\u2019 that the group recorded in the UK\u00a0as a farewell to guitarist and founder member\u00a0Greg Treadway, who left and returned to\u00a0California the next day.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy unedited we actually mean\u00a0untampered with,\u201d Palao is keen to clarify.\u00a0\u201cWhen Before The Dream Faded<\/em> was assembled\u00a0in \u201982, someone saw fit to add a \u2018psychedelic\u2019\u00a0backwards intro to it, with the implication\u00a0that this was how the track had been recorded,\u00a0causing some head-scratching amongst the\u00a0original participants.\u201d<\/p>\n
