{"id":5083,"date":"2021-10-09T14:03:51","date_gmt":"2021-10-09T13:03:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.shindig-magazine.com\/?p=5083"},"modified":"2021-10-09T14:03:51","modified_gmt":"2021-10-09T13:03:51","slug":"eyelids-the-minutes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shindig-magazine.com\/?p=5083","title":{"rendered":"Eyelids &#8216;The Minutes&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>CAMILLA AISA chats with EYELIDS about the release of their new single \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"EYELIDS &quot;THE MINUTES&quot;\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/E7wupW3cBzc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"IT\">When the pandemic first hit, Eyelids were starting to explore what their new album could morph into in a live setting. <i>The Accidental Falls<\/i> had just come out \u2013 written in collaboration with poet and Tim Buckley lyricist Larry Beckett and produced by R.E.M.\u2019s Peter Buck \u2013 \u00a0exquisitely confirming the Portland, OR band as one of today\u2019s finest purveyors of power-poppin\u2019 jangle rock. \u201c<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">We were feeling really good about playing <i>The Accidental Falls<\/i> live but we only got two shows into our tour before everything folded up<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u201d, Eyelids\u2019 Chris Slusarenko recalls. \u201c<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">I remember last year I put on <\/span><span lang=\"IT\">the LP<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> and I just started crying.<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">It was like listening to something for the first time.<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u00a0 <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">There were so many songs and cool moments on there that I had forgotten \u2013\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">it was a bit of an out of body experience for someone who was so involved with it.<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u00a0 <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">But I loved just listening and hearing everyone&#8217;s personalities on it.<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">And it was such a credit to Larry that his lyrics still felt like emotional extensions of us too<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"IT\">\u2018The Minutes\u2019 is one of the songs that came out of Beckett granting the group free access to his impressive songbook, with an invitation to pick whatever they liked best and get creative with it. \u201c<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">It was slightly overwhelming for us to go through all the hundreds of <\/span><span lang=\"IT\">l<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">yrics Larry Beckett has composed<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">, <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">from his early days with Tim Buckley all the way until 2019<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u201d, Chris says.\u00a0\u201c<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">But pretty quickly, John <\/span><span lang=\"IT\">[Moen] <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">and myself found lyrics that resonated for each of us.<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">We tried to find ones that would roll out of us emotionally.<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u00a0\u2018<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">The Minutes<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u2019<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> was one of the last ones I wrote the music for.<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u00a0 <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">And I like that it&#8217;s under two minutes so we didn&#8217;t make it to <\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u2018t<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">he <\/span><span lang=\"IT\">m<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">inutes<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u2019<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> after all<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"IT\">Debuting here for the first time, the song\u2019s video provides a nice link to Eyelids\u2019 post-<i>Accidental Falls<\/i> release, <i>Dubble Live!<\/i>. \u201c<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">We had decided not to go out on tour due to the pandemic, and putting out the live album seemed like a nice stop-gap way of celebrating the new record under weird circumstances,<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u201d<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u00a0John Moen explains. The video is a fun collage of some one-of-a-kind covers John designed for the record. \u201c<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">I love drawing\/cartooning and thought that individual covers would be a nice incentive<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u00a0for orders.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Chris wisely capped the offer once we&#8217;d hit 128 folks, and it still took forever for us to get them out to everyone.<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">I had bitten off more than I could chew.<\/span> <i><span lang=\"IT\">Chomp, chomp<\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-US\">. I think it was nearly a year before the last one had been sent out. The drawings are all just inspirations<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">of the moment except for a handful of special requests<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u201d. There\u2019s pancake-loving skeletons, cowboys, witches, horrified elves, pissed-off aliens, nods to The Byrds and even a hard-rocking knight that wouldn\u2019t feel out of place in <\/span><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">Monty Python &amp; The Holy Grail<\/span><\/i><span lang=\"IT\">. \u201c<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">I feel that they range pretty drastically in quality,<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u201d John considers. \u201cT<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">here may not be a masterpiece in the group, but it was just supposed to be a fun<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">extra. Thanks to all who signed-up, especially for their patience! I can&#8217;t really pick a favo<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">urite \u2013<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0most of them make me laugh a little bit.<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"IT\">Since <i>The Accidental Falls<\/i> and <i>Double Live!<\/i> came out, Eyelids have welcomed a new member in their ranks. We leave it to John to make introductions: \u201c<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">The lovely and accomplished Victor Krummenacher,<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">formerly of Camper Van Beetoven, Monks Of Doom, Third Mind and so many others! Why did he move to our town? Why did he want to play with us? How can we be so lucky? I&#8217;m just asking more questions! He is such a tasteful player; a songwriter&#8217;s<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">dream,<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">in terms of collaboration. I know that my younger CBV-fan-self did not anticipate this moment. We are hono<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">u<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">red to say the least!<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"DE\">Krummenacher<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">, who has a new album coming out on 15th October called <\/span><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">Silver Smoke Of Dreams<\/span><\/i><span lang=\"IT\">, will be on stage with Eyelids this autumn when they finally bring the <i>Accidental Falls <\/i>magic on tour in the US (starting from Portland on 16th October). \u201c<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">We got some offers to do some online video concerts but we just didn&#8217;t want to play alone in separate rooms from each other<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u201d, Chris admits. \u201c<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">So we waited until we were vaccinated and could see each other safely.<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">These upcoming tours are our way to finally get the chance to express all those songs to everyone.<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">There&#8217;s some intensity to many of these songs and it&#8217;ll be fun to see how they collide into each other live.<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"IT\">Meanwhile, we\u2019re happy to learn they\u2019ve been busy in the studio, recording new songs they mostly wrote during the pandemic with Peter Buck sitting at the producer\u2019s desk once again. New single \u2018Everything That I See You See Better\u2019 will be out in February. A quick peek at the tracklist reveals intriguing titles: \u2018P<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">ink Chair<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u2019, \u2018<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Swinging In The Circus<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u2019,\u00a0\u2018<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Lying In Your Tomb<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u2019, \u2018<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Colossal Waste of Light<\/span><span lang=\"IT\">\u2019.
