They\u2019ve been\u00a0shared by both Davies brothers and by various band members in\u00a0books, interviews, and articles. Narratives have been pieced\u00a0together by journalists who lived through the \u201960s as well as by\u00a0those who were born decades later. Yet the story of Dave Davies\u2019\u00a0journey as a songwriter has often taken a back seat to descriptions of\u00a0Ray\u2019s genius or the band\u2019s legendary antics. Long ago, before the rise of\u00a0The Kinks, or the magic of their songs, or any of the mayhem, Dave was\u00a0a young teenager in suburban London struck by a singer from Louisiana.\u00a0\u201cI was very interested in blues players,\u201d Dave tells Shindig!, \u201cespecially\u00a0Lead Belly. I thought Lead Belly was a really interesting person \u2013 his\u00a0character and his life. And it shows in how real his music was. Even\u00a0today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dave Davies - Death Of A Clown (1967)\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EcfJ66oSFnc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>With three tracks on the LP <i>Something\u00a0Else By The Kinks<\/i>, Dave had arrived. He\u00a0was chronicling the times and bearing his\u00a0deepest emotions. Like George Harrison,\u00a0another blossoming songwriter, Dave was\u00a0his band\u2019s lead guitarist and youngest\u00a0member. A solo hit was on the horizon.\u00a0Released in July \u201967, \u2018Death Of A\u00a0Clown\u2019 climbed to #3 in <i>Melody Maker<\/i>\u00a0and #4 in <i>NME<\/i>. While the success was a\u00a0welcome surprise, it altered the young\u00a0guitarist\u2019s path. No longer could he\u00a0inconspicuously pen B-sides or deep cuts.\u00a0Now Pye wanted a follow-up. They\u00a0wanted Dave to catch lightning in a\u00a0bottle\u2026 again.<\/p>\n<p>Stepping back into the studio in\u00a0October, Dave recorded \u2018Susannah\u2019s Still\u00a0Alive\u2019 with Ray, Pete, and Mick as his\u00a0backing band. With a jaunty piano run,\u00a0the catchy track offers a folk-pop portrait\u00a0of a hapless misfit. With memories of a\u00a0long gone loved one tucked inside a\u00a0locket, Susannah drowns her sorrows in\u00a0whisky and gin \u2013 not unlike the sad figure\u00a0in \u2018Death Of A Clown\u2019. Hitting record\u00a0shops in late November, the single reached\u00a0#20 in <i>NME<\/i> and\u00a0failed to chart in\u00a0<i>Melody Maker<\/i>. All at\u00a0once, the course of\u00a0Dave\u2019s career as a songwriter was\u00a0paralleling The Kinks\u2019 own descent as a\u00a0commercial force.<\/p>\n<p>A smattering of solo European dates for\u00a0Dave was set for February, March and\u00a0April \u201968, with a January press release\u00a0even announcing that Dave was\u00a0auditioning musicians for his own band.\u00a0When the first run of shows was\u00a0cancelled, the guitarist returned to the\u00a0studio in March. Ray had a new potential\u00a0A-side called \u2018Wonderboy\u2019, along with a few other songs on the go. Dave,\u00a0meanwhile, had two new songs of his\u00a0own.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Kinks - Lincoln County (Official Audio)\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8_Rsa3MKg80?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Co-written with Ray, \u2018There Is No Life\u00a0Without Love\u2019 forecasts Dave\u2019s later\u00a0explorations into spiritualism. With a\u00a0catchy country vibe, \u2018Lincoln County\u2019\u00a0relays the excited plans of a man who\u2019s\u00a0just been released from jail.<\/p>\n<p>A Kinks UK tour was set for April, but\u00a0<i>Disc &amp; Echo<\/i> published an unflattering\u00a0piece on the band\u2019s penchant for missing\u00a0gigs. Things got worse when\u00a0\u2018Wonderboy\u2019 failed to crack the Top 30.\u00a0Biding their time, Pye put Dave\u2019s own\u00a0single of \u2018Lincoln County\u2019 on hold as the\u00a0quartet returned to the studio in May and\u00a0June. After The Kinks played a run of\u00a0shows in Sweden, their new single \u2018Days\u2019\u00a0was released in the early summer.
