{"id":5997,"date":"2023-03-22T17:08:41","date_gmt":"2023-03-22T17:08:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.shindig-magazine.com\/?p=5997"},"modified":"2023-03-22T17:08:41","modified_gmt":"2023-03-22T17:08:41","slug":"bennett-wilson-poole-i-wanna-love-you-but-i-cant-right-now-premiere","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shindig-magazine.com\/?p=5997","title":{"rendered":"Bennett Wilson Poole &#8216;I Wanna Love You (But I Can&#8217;t Right Now) Premiere"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Nearly five years on from their acclaimed debut,\u00a0BENNETT WILSON POOLE reveal new\u00a0album <i>I Saw A Star Behind Your Eyes, Don\u2019t Let It Die Away<\/i>\u00a0, and here&#8217;s the first track pulled from it<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bennett Wilson Poole - I Wanna Love You (But I Can&#039;t Right Now) - (Official Video)\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KonK0x4Ly20?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>That eponymous first album was only ever intended\u00a0as a one-off collaborative project \u2013 a serendipitous series of events which began\u00a0with\u00a0a late evening session where the trio wrote \u2018Hate Won&#8217;t Win\u2019. A response\u00a0to the murder of MP Jo Cox, it was something of a fresh take on\u00a0Crosby Stills\u00a0Nash &amp; Young\u2019s classic protest song \u2018Ohio\u2019. The release saw Bennett Wilson\u00a0Poole (Robin Bennett from Goldrush\/Dreaming Spires, Danny Wilson from Grand Drive \/ Danny &amp; The Champions Of The World and Tony Poole, Starry Eyed &amp; Laughing) embraced by the Americana\u00a0community, playing live on the Andrew Marr show\u00a0and crowned as &#8220;UK Artist of the Year&#8221; at the 2019 UK Americana Awards, in\u00a0front of a\u00a0watching crowd including Graham Nash himself.<\/p>\n<p>The new album came together in similar fashion; Robin\u00a0and Danny started writing new songs late into the night\u00a0whilst\u00a0on tour to promote the first record \u2014 a tour which unfolded from a three-night\u00a0residency in a London pub into a year-long odyssey\u00a0culminating in a headline\u00a0show at King\u2019s Place \u2014 and before they knew it, there were enough songs to\u00a0begin recording an unplanned\u00a0second album.<\/p>\n<p>Robin: \u201cWe\u2019d get back to my house at\u00a0about 2am and then we\u2019d start working on songs\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Danny \u2013 \u201cIt was great, drinking wine\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Where the first record drank deep from \u201970s US West Coast folk-rock, the second has been heavily spiked with \u201960s British\u00a0psychedelia,\u00a0even featuring a cover by legendary counterculture artist John\u00a0Hurford (whose credits include \u201960s artwork for <i>Oz <\/i>Magazine and\u00a0<i>International\u00a0Times<\/i>).<\/p>\n<p>Tony Poole\u2019s meticulous and inspired production has\u00a0spun Robin and Danny\u2019s fresh batch of songs into a delicate web of musical\u00a0delight.\u00a0Fans of the &#8220;spot the reference&#8221; game Tony started on the first record\u00a0won\u2019t be disappointed this time either, as there are plenty more to\u00a0be found\u00a0here.<\/p>\n<p>TP: \u201cWhen we were playing live we had\u00a0what Danny called \u2018TP Bingo\u2019 on all these different songs \u2013 the new album\u2019s got\u00a0a little bit of Bingo\u00a0on it I think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Danny: \u201cTony, \u2018cause he loves to do this, plants little (not so)\u00a0hidden little gems very, very inspired by his favourite tunes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5998\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shindig-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/ucabFlmw.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shindig-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/ucabFlmw.jpeg 1920w, https:\/\/shindig-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/ucabFlmw-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/shindig-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/ucabFlmw-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/shindig-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/ucabFlmw-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/shindig-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/ucabFlmw-1536x1024.jpeg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As with the first album, the lyrics don\u2019t shy\u00a0away from current affairs \u2013 by the end of that year of touring, the band were\u00a0already playing &#8216;I\u00a0Wanna Love You (But I Can\u2019t Right Now)&#8217;, reflecting on the\u00a0state of US politics, yet optimistic that the problems are only temporary. \u00a0 Many of the tracks on the new album feature live\u00a0rhythm section Fin Kenny (drums) and Joe Bennett (bass) for the first time on a\u00a0BWP\u00a0record, including Danny\u2019s deft swipe at reality TV and radio phone-ins, &#8216;Tie-dye\u00a0T-shirt&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Danny:\u00a0\u00a0\u201cI was watching those American and English TV\u00a0makeover shows, flicking through the telly&#8230; \u00a0basically, the really sort of\u00a0straight-edge family has got some member of the family\u00a0who wears stuff they\u00a0don\u2019t wear, and they all cry tears of joy when this person comes out from\u00a0behind the curtain looking exactly like them, and you just think, \u2018crikey, I\u00a0thought you\u00a0looked better when you had Terry Nutkins hair and a tie-dye T shirt!\u00a0It\u2019s almost like a sort of born-again zeal to make people who don\u2019t fit in look\u00a0exactly the same as everybody else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The title of the album comes from the lyrics of \u2018Help\u00a0Me See My Way\u2019, the first single, a prayer for strength in difficult times, the\u00a0trippy\u00a0animated video for which was originally issued during lockdown. The\u00a0dreamy positivity of the line &#8220;I saw a star behind your eyes&#8221; is\u00a0tempered\u00a0with the plea &#8220;don&#8217;t let it die away&#8221;, a message which feels as\u00a0important as ever two years on.<\/p>\n<p>Robin: \u00a0The album\u2019s called \u2018I\u00a0Saw A Star Behind Your Eyes, Don\u2019t Let It Die Away\u2019, or as other people will\u00a0call it,
