{"id":6609,"date":"2024-10-17T10:09:02","date_gmt":"2024-10-17T09:09:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.shindig-magazine.com\/?p=6609"},"modified":"2024-10-17T10:09:40","modified_gmt":"2024-10-17T09:09:40","slug":"calibro-35-play-morricone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shindig-magazine.com\/?p=6609","title":{"rendered":"Calibro 35 Play Morricone + Exclusive Playlist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ahead of the Italian maestros new EP and show on <a href=\"https:\/\/unionchapel.org.uk\/whats-on\/calibro-35-feat-studio-clich-plays-morricone-audiovisual-concert\">29th October at The Union Chapel <\/a>here&#8217;s a fantastic playlist the guys have compiled especially for <em>Shindig!.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border-radius: 12px;\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/playlist\/4LBWFGWKCwChpGEle2KaZ6?utm_source=generator\" width=\"100%\" height=\"352\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Trafelato<\/strong> \u00a0(<strong>from <em>The Fifth Chord<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Where it all started. Our version of this song \u2013 included on our first album \u2013 is the first thing we ever recorded back in 2007 and it really describes well what drew us to investigate the sound of obscure Italian soundtracks of the \u201960s and the \u201970s. Killer groove, killer bass line, weird sounds and tons of attitude.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Milano Odia La Polizia Non Pu\u00f2 Sparare (from <em>Almost Human<\/em>)<\/strong><br \/>\nClassic Morricone crime movie atmosphere for a hyper violent movie directed by Umberto Lenzi. The stiff, constant, almost unstoppable rhythm played by the piano and drums has some kind of a martial DNA to it, perfect to describe the fight between the law and the criminal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>L&#8217;Arena (from\u00a0<em>Il Mercenario)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Such an epic tune containing pretty much all of Morricone&#8217;s spaghetti western tools in one song: the whip, the whistle, crackling noises, dramatic strings, rolling snares, deguello trumpet, epic choir, twangy guitar and so forth&#8230;. We recorded our own version of it for our\u00a0<em>Scacco al Maestro<\/em>\u00a0album featuring the amazing Matthew Bellamy whistling.<br \/>\nSqueezing it all for a seven musician ensemble at our live concert has been a challenge but it is such a joy to play it we could not escape it!<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Metti una sera a cena (from\u00a0<em>Metti una sera a cena<\/em>)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On of the greatest and most lavish song ever sung by the amazing EddaDell&#8217;Orso and beautifully written and orchestrated by our beloved Maestro. Pure cinematic timeless bossa flavour.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Svegliati e Uccidi (from\u00a0<em>Wake Up And Die<\/em>)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a complicated one. It took several years for us to have the guts and patience to sit down in the studio, learn the song and record it but I&#8217;m so glad we did it! (for the\u00a0<em>Scacco al Maestro<\/em>\u00a0project).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I love the endless question and answer mechanism between all instruments \u2013 flute, piano, guitar, tubular bells, cellos, trombones&#8230; \u2013 \u00a0it&#8217;s SO driving and the listener can almost see images just listening to the music.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Un tranquillo posto di campagna (from\u00a0<em>Un tranquillo posto di campagna<\/em>)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Orchestration galore here! This soundtrack includes a big collection of usual and not-so-usual timbres to describe the psychedelic-atmosphere of the movie.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s interesting to see how all the sounds fit together so well: from banjo to percussion to toy piano, nothing is misplaced and the puzzle is perfect.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Indagine su un Cittadino al di sopra di ogni sospetto (from\u00a0<em>Investigation On A Citizen Above Suspicion)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another super classic by Morricone for the 1970 Academy Award winning movie by the same title. Sound research at its finest mixing Sicilian maranzano, fuzz guitars, out of tune piano and sharp strings orchestration for a clunky and unsteady rhythm.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Passeggiata Notturna (from\u00a0<em>Cat Of Nine Tails<\/em>)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morricone and Dario Argento has been a great combo for three soundtracks we love:\u00a0<em>The Bird with The Crystal Plumage<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Cat Of Nine Tails<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Four Flies On Grey Velvet<\/em>. The Maestro unleash all his contemporary music repertoire here with whispers, flute, celeste, plucked piano and guitar all dancing on top of a super hypnotic brush drums and bass groove.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The Good, The Bad And The ugly (from <em>The Good, The Bad And The Ugly<\/em>)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You cannot talk about Morricone without mentioning his work for Sergio Leone&#8217;s westerns. With the\u00a0<em>Dollars<\/em>\u00a0trilogy they re-defined western movies both in images and sound at the end of the &#8217;60s introducing countless innovation and never-thought-before solutions that would later become absolute classics for the genre.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Ricreazione Divertita (from<em> Cuore Di Mamma<\/em>)<\/strong><br \/>\nMorricone is an endless source of surprises and inspiration. We never, and i mean NEVER, cease to discover music he did that we didn&#8217;t know before. This one has recently been sampled by an underground american rapper &#8211; The Buttress &#8211; for a super killer song titled &#8216;Brutus&#8217;. Bringing its sound back from the vault and making it our own has been a mission since day one for us!\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Dre and Jay-Z sampled Italian cinematic funk legends Calibro 35 are always in search of new territories to venture into. Their new journey is called \u2018Jazzploitation\u2019: a new EP paying tribute to jazz-funk, rare groove and pshychedelic cinematic-jazz, to be released next October 18<sup>th<\/sup> on digital platforms via Record Kicks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">None of the members of Calibro 35 are (or consider themselves) jazz musicians, but over the years jazz has often and significantly inspired them. \u2018Jazzploitation\u2019 is not a \u201cjazz record\u201d but an \u201cinspired by jazz\u201d EP in which Calibro 35 pay homage to some of their favorite musicians;
