The presenter holds up the <em>It\u2019s About Time <\/em>album, introducing Paula Pierce and The Pandoras. The camera zooms in on the cover, revealing her bandmates&#8217; faces, each one crossed out in black marker. Only Pierce&#8217;s face remains untouched. It&#8217;s 1984, and the version of The Pandoras that had worked so hard on their most famous album is no more. Weeks earlier, Pierce had turned down both X and Agent Orange shows declaring they weren\u2019t \u201cauthentically \u201960s\u201d enough for her vision. When she rejected Agent Orange, the band\u2019sbassist Bambi Conway had seen enough. \u201cIf we can\u2019t play that show, I\u2019m leaving the band,\u201d she declared. Pierce seized Conway\u2019s departure as amoment to reshape the band entirely \u2013 telling keyboardist Gwynne Kahn she was out of the band too. The band\u2019s drummer, Casey Gomez, decidedto walk not long after. None of them knew they wouldn\u2019t perform the songs from <em>It\u2019s About Time <\/em>\u2013 the album that would become a cult classic \u2013together again for 40 years.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Pandoras - Hot Generation\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GeoCkPD20Gc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPrimitive.\u201d Kahn doesn\u2019t hesitate when asked to sum up the original Pandoras in one word. \u201cThat was a popular one. There was a song called\u2018Primitive\u2019 from a \u201960s garage band called The Groupies \u2013 The Cramps covered it \u2013 it was a very common adjective, \u2018Man that\u2019s real primitive.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Primitive, raw, unfiltered \u2013 these aren\u2019t insults in the lexicon of garage-rock. Especially when you\u2019re talking about a band that helped define LA\u2019s Paisley Underground scene before it even had a proper name. For the original Pandoras, \u201cprimitive\u201d meant stripped down and basic, gritty and unpolished \u2013 but also tight, focused, and powerful. It meant not overthinking or over producing; just capturing that electric moment when everything clicks.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Pandoras - Want Need Love\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/e4Rm158V3eA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The original Pandoras \u2013 Kahn, Conway, Gomez, and the late Paula Pierce \u2013 are the musicians who actually recorded the <em>It\u2019s About Time <\/em>album in 1984. This distinction matters because subsequent lineups toured under The Pandoras name for decades, creating confusion about who created the cult classic that\u2019s been continuously in \u00a0print for 40 years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The band\u2019s name itself came from Kahn, who suggested Pandoras as both a reference to the Greek myth and the legendary Sunset Strip club. \u201cPaula had some really terrible ideas.
