But their Sire Records debut <\/strong><strong>took too long and <\/strong><strong>failed to capture their explosive live mania. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>TIM STEGALL looks at how newly surfaced pre-production tapes might have made a better <\/strong><strong>impression<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI can\u2019t really sum up what makes them great, other than that Jeff has the world\u2019s greatest sense of exactly what needs to be played and never plays anything else,\u201d veteran Boston rock journalist Brett Milano once wrote about DMZ, his city\u2019s flagship mid-70s punk-rock band, fronted by volatile singer\/keyboardist Jeff \u2018Mono Mann\u2019 Conolly. \u201cThe band just embodies that primal spirit that is rock \u2019n\u2019 roll.\u201d For his part, Conolly, whose nickname derived from his penchant for collecting monophonic records, was simultaneously clear <em>and<\/em> disingenuous in describing his contributions to DMZ when speaking to San Francisco writer and radio DJ Howie Klein in 1978. &#8220;I&#8217;m just lookin&#8217; for something to make DMZ sound good,\u201d he shrugged. \u201cNo message. We want people to dance when we play. We&#8217;re looking for a good beat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Relics\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/videoseries?list=OLAK5uy_nmGGck4MPf3wFpLTEKPHQgpdzi6rWZZPw\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Well, so is any other band with a drummer! But what Conolly is missing here is that in \u201977, DMZ answered the question no one thought to ask upon their first hearing of \u2018Anarchy In The UK\u2019 or \u2018Blitzkrieg Bop\u2019: \u201cWhat if Iggy &amp; The Stooges circa <em>Raw Power<\/em>had discovered a scratchy old copy of <em>Here Are The Sonics<\/em> while dumpster diving behind a Knights Of Columbus hall in Tacoma, Washington?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7569\" src=\"https:\/\/shindig-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Photo-10-03-2026-08-07-17-1-819x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shindig-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Photo-10-03-2026-08-07-17-1-819x1024.jpeg 819w, https:\/\/shindig-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Photo-10-03-2026-08-07-17-1-240x300.jpeg 240w, https:\/\/shindig-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Photo-10-03-2026-08-07-17-1-768x960.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/shindig-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Photo-10-03-2026-08-07-17-1-1229x1536.jpeg 1229w, https:\/\/shindig-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Photo-10-03-2026-08-07-17-1-1638x2048.jpeg 1638w, https:\/\/shindig-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Photo-10-03-2026-08-07-17-1-scaled.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No one better translated the fuzz \u2019n\u2019 Farfisa-laden snottiness of \u201960s American garage-rock <em>a la<\/em> The Seeds and Standells to the feral blast of early \u201970s New York Dolls\/Stooges proto-punk. DMZ\u2019s fusion was seamless, due to their frontman.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI grew up in the \u201960s listening to all those records,\u201d Conolly recalled years later. \u201cI was a huge fan of The Blues Magoos when I was 10 years old \u2013 back in \u201966-67. I liked a lot of garage-rock, especially \u2018Liar, Liar\u2019 by The Castaways.\u201d Band co-founder and guitarist JJ Rassler acknowledges that he and the other band members \u2013 lead guitarist Peter Greenberg, bassist Rick Coraccio and drummer Paul Murphy, in their classic formation \u2013 already enjoyed the sounds showcased on Lenny Kaye\u2019s 1972 <em>Nuggets<\/em>compilation. Indeed, a rabid take of the Elevators\u2019 \u2018You\u2019re Gonna Miss Me\u2019 dominated \u201977&#8217;s four-song <em>DMZ<\/em>EP on Bomp!
