Told by The Rolling Stones\u2019 Mick Taylor the year before they were \u201cthe worst high school band [he\u2019s] ever heard\u201d and that they had \u201cjust six months to polish it up,\u201d Johansen snarled, \u201cNo, they were <em>the best<\/em> high school band he\u2019d ever heard,\u201d and he could \u201cgo screw\u201d. He petulantly sniffed to <em>CREEM<\/em>\u2019s Ben Edmonds that prior to signing with Mercury, the front rows of their shows were filled with \u201cbalding old relics with their polished heads, snorting coke and thinking that they\u2019re so outtasite. I\u2019m supposed to get a record contract outta these people?\u201d he bayed. \u201cIt\u2019s like I\u2019m just a prostitute, right, but if I\u2019m okay maybe they\u2019ll give me a Lincoln and make me a pimp.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"NEW YORK DOLLS - Jet Boy  (1973 UK TV OGWT Performance) ~ HIGH QUALITY HQ ~\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Cbd-BcuPvLA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hence Harris shouldn\u2019t have been surprised, upon showing up backstage to gladhand the Dolls, that Johansen sniggered that he had \u201cbunny teeth\u201d. Equally, Johansen could hardly have been shocked at Harris\u2019 introductory description of the band as \u201cto the Stones what The Monkees were to The Beatles \u2013 a pale-if-amusing derivative\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nineteen seventy-three television cameras apparently loved Johnny Thunders\u2019 back. In both appearances, the camera widens from a tight close-up of whatever adorns his spinal column, revealing him whirling around as he bangs out the opening riff. In this case, it\u2019s a skull-and-crossbones crudely painted on back of a beaten vintage motorcycle jacket, planting his lineage more firmly in rockin\u2019 rebel territory than glam androgyny. Strapped over his shoulders wasn\u2019t the Gibson Les Paul Special he\u2019d played at <em>The Midnight Special, <\/em>but a Vox Teardrop guitar similar to Brian Jones\u2019, purchased by bassist Arthur \u2018Killer\u2019 Kane in a Leeds pawn shop for \u00a320.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Jet Boy\u2019 roared from Britain\u2019s tinny eight-inch TV speakers the following night, lip-synched from the new single \u2013 odd for a show that generally favoured live-in-the-studio performances. Was Auntie Beeb implying the Dolls weren\u2019t good enough to play live?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thunders did his stumbling whirling-dervish act, Sylvain proudly displayed his new Gretsch White Falcon guitar he\u2019d picked up shortly before flying out of New York, and Johansen mugged viciously in a polka dot chemise. It\u2019s noticeable, watching their movements to the playback \u2013 which sounds even clearer than the record \u2013 how <em>musical<\/em> the Dolls were, despite their amateurish reputation. Thunders and Sylvain are not bashing tandem power chords, like most of the punks who followed them. The guitars are <em>arranged, <\/em>in interlocking parts, with a fully developed dynamic sense. Arthur\u2019s bass locks in with Jerry Nolan\u2019s post-Gene Krupa swing, playing minimal lines that are hardly meat-and-potatoes root notes. This was <em>not<\/em> The Shaggs.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"New York Dolls - Looking for a Kiss\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GvmvMFXWzc8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0The song ends with a quick cut to Harris in close up, chuckling \u201cmock rock\u201d. He likely thought he was condemning this <em>blight<\/em>on \u201cproper\u201d rock. But that sneering establishment reaction was a dog whistle to a generation of future UK punks watching at home: the old guard <em>hated<\/em> this thing. Which meant young outsiders immediately sensed life in it. &#8220;Fuck you, you old wanker! I&#8217;m stealin&#8217; a bleedin&#8217; guitar!
