David and The Lower Third gelled into a tough, loud unit over a summer spent constantly back and forward in their ambulance to coastal towns like Bournemouth, Portsmouth and St Leonards-on-Sea. \u201cLooking back on it, it just felt like a lot of fun at the time, and quite mischievous,\u201d David later said. \u201cYou laugh a lot when you\u2019re young and a lot of it was very funny.\u201d<\/p>\n

One day he suggested wearing make-up on stage to his bandmates. \u201cI thought that was really peculiar, and it looked rather good,\u201d he later recalled. A bemused Lancaster relayed this to Rivens, who was driving the ambulance. \u201cFuck that,\u201d uttered \u2018Death\u2019.<\/p>\n

They\u2019d continued to demo new material at Central Sound between gigs and jingle sessions, but Talmy again passed on beat ballad \u2018I\u2019ll Follow You\u2019, and \u2018Glad I\u2019ve Got Nobody\u2019 which cheekily swiped its intro from The Kinks\u2019 \u2018Everybody\u2019s Going To Be Happy\u2019. Finally in June, Talmy agreed to supervise two songs at a proper session at IBC.<\/p>\n
