You could get your ass kicked if you were in the wrong spot\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7911 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/shindig-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Untitled-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1181\" height=\"871\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shindig-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Untitled-1.png 1181w, https:\/\/shindig-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Untitled-1-300x221.png 300w, https:\/\/shindig-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Untitled-1-1024x755.png 1024w, https:\/\/shindig-magazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Untitled-1-768x566.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1181px) 100vw, 1181px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We recorded a lot of demos, but all they ever released was a cassette-mixed single that nobody was very happy with,&#8221; was Tom Petty\u2019s 1977 summary of Mudcrutch\u2019s Shelter contract, the single being the vaguely reggae-fied \u2018Depot Street\u2019. Then Shelter forced their dissolution, keeping only Petty under contract, putting him in the studio to track with the cream of LA session aces like Jim Keltner and Booker T &amp; The MGs bassist Donald \u2018Duck\u2019 Dunn. \u201cI didn&#8217;t dig that at all,\u201d Petty groused to Dadomo, \u201cbecause good as they are, it wasn&#8217;t a band. So that never really got off the ground because I couldn&#8217;t really get behind it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What happened next depends on whose memory you\u2019re standing in, which is itself the most interesting thing about it: three men who were all in the room that night still can\u2019t fully agree on it, five decades on.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benmont Tench claims it began with him owing a favour. \u201cI had a friend who was an assistant recording engineer at Village Recorders,\u201d he says. \u201cThey\u2019d let you have studio time during off-hours if you brought in friends to record. He pestered me while \u2013 I\u2019m lazy \u2013 and finally I gave in.\u201d Tench called Lynch, who brought Blair, his neighbour in Laurel Canyon and his \u201cfantasy bass player\u201d. Tench also called in Mike Campbell, with whom, per Lynch, he shares \u201cspecial DNA\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cBen\u2019s hands go to the exact right place on the keyboard,\u201d insists Lynch. \u201cMike\u2019s hands go to the fretboard at exactly the right place at the right time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&quot;Lost&quot; album of Mudcrutch\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/videoseries?list=PLunwkaXWmD5q3Y6F0_0aP9VPipdYfkTHy\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both Lynch and Tench agree they discussed starting a boozy, good-time band <em>\u00e0 la<\/em> Faces, called The Drunks. For now, the plan was simply to cut Tench\u2019s own songs, including one called \u2018Once Upon A Time\u2019, featuring a guitar solo Lynch says he can still hum to this day. \u201cMike played this one-note kinda \u2018bagpipe\u2019 solo where he just finds the money note and strangles it. It put me in tears as a kid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Petty showed up almost incidentally, by Blair\u2019s memory, simply to watch. \u201cAfter about an hour watching him behind the console, it shifted,\u201d says Blair. \u201c\u2018Wow, he\u2019s staying?\u2019 It was becoming something cool right before our eyes and ears.\u201d Lynch remembers Petty sitting in on harmonica without much ceremony, then the phone ringing the next morning: \u201cHe said, \u2018You want to be in a band with me?\u2019 And I said, \u2018Yeah, I\u2019d love to.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tench\u2019s version runs through Petty\u2019s then-wife Jane instead, a phone call the following day relaying that Tom would rather use the band than session players. \u201cI was like, hallelujah, I\u2019m home,\u201d Tench says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No ex-Mudcrutcher still in the picture \u2013 Petty, Campbell and Tench \u2013 felt Blair and Lynch muscled in on something already finished. Instead, Blair indicates it \u201cfelt like real music\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt wasn\u2019t completely new, but it was something we\u2019d been doing all those years anyway,\u201d he says. \u201cYou\u2019re trying to catch a groove and do something that feels right.\u201d Tench agrees the Gainesville shorthand did the rest of the work: \u201cWe came from the same soil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>To read the whole article order issue #180 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silverbackpublishing.rocks\/product\/shindig_180\/\">here<\/a>.
