Named, literally, after Pentangle’s 1969 song ‘Light Flight’, which was also the theme to TV show Take Three Girls, this weighty playlist is an imaginary late in the day holiday as a musical travelogue – and one that would have taken place in the good old days before climate crisis and drought.
Starting in spring, with the first rays of sun, rain and walks in the forest, the mood is pastoral and light. The next phase is the move into summer and the realisation that you need to get away before the kids return to school. After booking a short break away to somwhere hot in late August, the car is packed and you head up the motorway to the airport. The flight is a joy, white fluffy clouds surround you and your mind relaxes. Landing somewhere pleasingly hot, you pick up a hire car and head off down the road to the coast. After resting up and gentle tourism you then take in beaches and (for the grown ups) clubs and bars, before journeying home. Surprisingly, you land in an Indian summer. What joy.
Seriously, that’s the scenario that crossed my mind as I put this together. This type of music can do that. Predominantly featuring library pieces, there’s also some prog and jazz (which, of course, informed so much library music anyway). At times ambient, elsewhere groovy, this is the ultimate late summer playlist to drift off to as you close your eyes and soak up the warmth.
